This message is to share some important information about norovirus, often referred to as the “stomach bug,” as cases tend to increase during the winter months.
What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines). It spreads easily through close contact, contaminated surfaces, food, or water.
Common Symptoms:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Stomach cramps
- Low-grade fever, headache, or body aches
Symptoms usually begin 12–48 hours after exposure and typically last 1–3 days.
When to Stay Home:
Students and staff should remain home if experiencing:
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
Individuals may return to school only after being symptom-free for 48 hours without the use of medication.
Prevention Tips:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water (hand sanitizer is not as effective against norovirus)
- Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly
- Avoid sharing food or drinks
- Encourage students to report symptoms promptly
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
