The Mount Greylock Regional School District Medication Policy, complies with the state guidelines for medication administration to ensure the health and safety of students who require daily medication.

105 CMR 210.000: THE ADMINISTRATION OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS IN PUBLIC AND  PRIVATE SCHOOLS 

Important information to know:

• All medications, prescriptions, or over the counter medications, require a physician’s order and parental consent form, or the medication cannot be administered. 

• All medications must be in the original pharmacy container and delivered to the school nurse by the student’s parent/guardian or designee. 

• No medication is to be sent into school with a student.  

• The pharmacy-labeled bottle can be used in lieu of a physician’s order only in the case of short-term medications (for ten school days or fewer).

• Only a thirty (30) day supply of medication will be accepted at any time.

• All over the counter medications will be handed the same way as prescription medications.

• Self-medication may be allowed under certain circumstances after speaking with the school nurse.

• Students are not permitted to carry medications, including over the counter.

• All medications may be retrieved by the parent/guardian at any time. 

• All medication orders expire at the end of the school year. 

• Medication orders must be renewed at the beginning of the new school year.

• All medication will be destroyed if it is not picked up at the end of the school year.

Self Administration: 

In certain circumstances, students have the right to self-administer daily medication.  Massachusetts Law Chapter 71, Section 54B states that self administration cannot be prohibited in schools for the following situations.

• Students with asthma or other respiratory diseases cannot be prohibited from carrying and administering prescription inhalers or epinephrine auto-injectors.  

• Students with cystic fibrosis cannot be prohibited from carrying and administering prescription enzyme supplements.

• Students with diabetes cannot be prohibited from carrying and administering a glucose monitoring test and insulin delivery system.

Required Physicals:

Massachusetts law (M.G.L. c 71, s 57 and related amendments and regulations 105 CMR 200.000- 200.920) require physical examinations of school children within 13 months before entry into school or during the first year after entry, and at intervals of either 3 or 4 years thereafter, such as Kindergarten, 4th grade, 7th grade and 10th grade.

Mount Greylock Regional School requires for all students during the following increments:

• One year prior or 30 days after entry into the district 

• Grades 7 & 10

• Annually prior to participation in school sponsored athletics

• At the high school level, a student participating in interscholastic athletics must submit a current physical exam

Immunizations:

All students entering grade 7 must have received a Tdap booster.  Students who are not in compliance will be excluded from school until documentation is submitted with proof of the vaccine.  

All students entering grade 11 must have received 1 booster dose of meningococcal vaccine.  One or more doses of MenACWY are acceptable as long as 1 dose was received on or after 16 years of age.

Massachusetts Mandated Health Screenings

Schools are required by Massachusetts General Law to provide vision, hearing, body mass index (BMI), postural, and Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) health screenings to all students.

• Vision and Hearing screening will be implemented in grade 10
• Height and weight screenings will be implemented in grades 7 and 10
• Postural screening will be implemented in grades 7,8 and 9
• SBIRT screenings will be implemented in grades 7 and 10
• Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment will be implemented in grades  7 and 10.  We will be using the CRAFFT Screening Tool.

Parents and/or guardians may wish to have the screening done by their physician. For your child to be exempt from screening in school, please provide the following documentation to your school nurse:

Vision & Hearing:  copy of the screening results from the physician for the current school year.

Height & Weight: Parent/Guardian must provide a written request to the school clinic if they do not   wish their child to participate in this program.

Postural: Copy of the screening results from the physician for the current school year or documentation that the student is under care for scoliosis for the current school year.

SBIRT: Parent/Guardian must provide a written request to the school clinic if they do not wish their child to participate in this program.

If your child has been diagnosed with a concussion, please contact the nurse to discuss the details of  support available to your student.

If a student sustains a head injury during school hours, the nurse will assess the student.  If the symptoms are consistent with a concussion, then the school nurse will reach out to parents/guardians requesting that they reach out to their physician.  At that point, a concussion packet will be given to the student for the physician to fill out.

If the physician diagnoses the student with a concussion, then the student must follow the guidance of their physician.  If the student has not been diagnosed with a concussion, then the student may return to school as normal.  It is important to note, the student must present the Post Medical Clearance form to the school nurse whether they are concussed or not.

In accordance with the Massachusetts law 105 CMR 201.000, any student with a head injury or possible concussion must be evaluated and cleared by a physician before they are able to return to physical education and/or athletic participation.

If the student’s physician has requested academic accommodations, please notify the school nurse.  These are temporary symptom-specific accommodations to support the student’s return to academic activities. The nurse will provide the student’s teachers a copy of the accommodations.

Please note:  students must be back in the classroom full-time without academic accommodations in order to begin the Return to Play Protocol.  

If the student is not participating in athletics or a PE class, the parents/guardians are responsible for overseeing and completing the Return to Play Protocol. Please reach out to the nurse for further guidance. The form is in the Head Injury Packet.
