- How anonymous is this "anonymous" suggestion box?
No record is made of the identity of the person submitting a comment on the suggestion box form. Even when you provide an email address for the purpose of receiving a copy of your submission, that information is not saved.
However, the internet address (IP address) of the gateway computer through which you accessed the internet is logged. This is not the address of your computer, but rather the computer at your internet service provider which provides your connection to the internet. Under certain circumstances, for example if a submission refers to potentially illegal activity (e.g. a bomb threat), it may be possible to trace a submission back to your computer using access logs at your ISP - this generally requires a court order.
- Does "anonymous" mean "confidential?"
Absolutely not! Your submission is forwarded through non-secure email to ten people. It may be quoted from and discussed in public meetings. The only promise we make is that you will not be identified as the source of the comments.
- Why do we have to enter those squiggly letters on the form?
The purpose is to thwart automated spamming software that trolls the internet and dumps spam into forms on web pages. Without this obstacle, we would be innundated with spam, which would seriously diminish the effectiveness of the suggestion box.
- What will happen if I submit rude or insulting comments?
Most likely nothing! Remember that your submissions are read by regular folks just like you. If someone is rude to you, most likely you aren't going to stick around to hear what they have to say.
- What should I do if I want someone to follow up with me on my suggestion?
The best way would be to contact that person directly instead of using the suggestion form. However you can include your name and contact information in the text of your suggestion, along with a request to be contacted. We cannot guarantee that someone will respond to you, however.
