Greylock in the News: Dance at Mount Greylock

Wednesday February 15, 2012 WILLIAMSTOWN -- Several students at Mount Greylock Regional High School spent Tuesday morning dancing to the rhythms of a different culture.

About 35 students in grades nine through 12 participated in one of two dance workshops led by the internationally acclaimed Taiwanese dance company, Cloud Gate 2.

"We do rhythms as part of the curriculum, and some dance, but this kind of dance we could never teach," physical education teacher Brian Gill said.

Having Cloud Gate 2 and other dance groups come to Mount Greylock gives students the opportunity to learn the art from the best, Gill said.

"For us, it's a great experience," he said.

While stretching exercises are often part of the workshops, students also find their minds are stretched, too, he said.

Each workshop began with dancers leading students in meditation and warm-up exercises. Students then learned the basic moves of traditional Taiwanese dance.

Ninth-graders Samantha Adams and Cate Nowlan, both 14, said the dancing was a lot different, but similar in ways, to what they do as performers with the Berkshire Dance Theater.

"The counting, preparations and little leaps are the same. What is different is the technique," Nowlan said.

She and Adams love to dance, so it was only natural that they sign up for the workshop, she said.

"It's really great to be able to get out of class and do something you always want to do," she said.Kaatje White, director of the Williams Center at Mount Greylock, said the workshops were made possible by the '62 Center for Theatre and Dance at Williams College, which has partnered with the school on past dance workshops.

The collaboration allows Mount Greylock students to be exposed to the arts in a way that is creatively inspiring and to open their minds to experimentation and participation in various art forms, she said.

"Every opportunity we have to bring the arts to kids, the richer they'll lives will be," she said.

Students who participated in the workshops were also given free tickets to a performance by Cloud Gate 2 at the '62 Center on Wednesday.

Aside for Taiwanese dance, the dance company also performs a mixture of Tai Chi, contemporary dance, Chinese Opera movement and ballet.

Senior Meaghan Albert, 17, said it was really cool and relaxing to learn the Taiwanese dance moves, and it was definitely a fun way to break up the school day.

"I play three different sports, so I don't have a lot of experience when it comes to dancing," she said. "This was a good experience."

Click here for the original story in the Transcript.

To reach Meghan Foley,
email mfoley@thetranscript.com.

OLDER STORY FROM MGRHS WEBSITE BELOW:

Workshops for Students to be Led by Renowned Taiwanese Dance Company, Cloud Gate 2: 2/14/12

Continuing its partnership with the '62 Center for Theatre and Dance and Williams College, Mount Greylock Regional School will host two dance workshops for students led by the internationally acclaimed Taiwanese dance company, Cloud Gate 2.

The company is in Williamstown to perform at the '62 Center MainStage on February 15th. Prior to that performance, and as part of the '62 Center's Integrated Programming events, dancers from Cloud Gate 2 will lead two workshops at Mount Greylock for interested students of all levels on Tuesday morning, February 14th.

Trained in Tai Chi, meditation, Chinese Opera movement, modern dance and ballet, Cloud Gate 2 performs a rich repertoire with roots in Asian myths, folklore, and aesthetics, but infused with a contemporary perspective. Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan was founded in 1973 as the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. Cloud Gate 2 consists of 13 young dancers, who are trained in contemporary dance, ballet and traditional Chi Kung exercise.

"Greylock students are so fortunate to have this opportunity to work and dance with internationally recognized performers. The dancers' ability to interact with high school students is inspiring and hopefully will lead our students to a better appreciation of the art of dance and of the culture and ideas that inform the dancers work," said Kaatje White, the Director of the Williams Center at Mount Greylock.

Randal Fippinger, the '62 Center Manager of Performances & Events, said further, "The '62 Center is very committed to having an on-going relationship with Mount Greylock. Each of the artists who perform in our Center Series will also lead workshops at Mount Greylock, and we are eager to encourage Greylock students to come to the '62 Center as well."

Free tickets to the February 15th Cloud Gate 2 performance at the '62 Center are available for Mount Greylock students and faculty.

This performance and related programming is made possible by the W. Ford Schumann '50 Endowment for the Arts and the Lipp Family Fund for Performing Artists.

For more information, please contact Kaatje White, Director of the Williams Center at Mount Greylock, (413) 884-2608, or kaatje.w.white@williams.edu.

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. — The annual Berkshire County High School Art Show returns for its 26th year at Norman Rockwell Museum with an exhibition opening on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m.

The opening event will include refreshments, the chance to meet the artists behind the works on view, as well as a lecture at 2 for budding artists and their families provided by multimedia artist Ricky Bernstein.

This year's exhibit showcases 131 works of art in a variety of media from 16 different schools and organizations in Berkshire County. The show allows young artists ro learn how to prepare their work for a gallery show, acquire a personal understanding of the exhibition process, and have the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional museum setting. Admission is free for the high school show, but it does not include regular museum admission. The exhibition is sponsored by Berkshire Bank Foundation/Legacy Region.

Participating schools include Berkshire Arts & Technology Public Charter School, Berkshire School, Drury High School, John Dewey Academy, Lenox Memorial High School, Miss Hall's School, Monument Mountain Regional High School, Mount Everett High School, Mount Greylock Regional High School, Pittsfield High School, St. Joseph Central High School, Taconic High School and Wahconah Regional High School.
